Vintage Mechanic Cabinet Makeover

Here we are, Sunday! It's officially a school night and I'm so not sure how I'm feeling about this. Sure, I'm ready for a day to day routine again. I just know by the end of this week we will have been through 3 first days. School will officially be started. I will officially be a day time empty nester. I think I'm gonna miss the little guy, more than I'm letting on.

So I knew I needed a place to store all my craft junk and school supplies. Yes, I need a place to store all those little crafty this and that's. You know. The kids need easy access to supplies as well. What to do what to do?!?

I had this ugly cabinet sitting in my garage that the hubby saved from a dumpster. When he brought it home I was really thinking it would be storage for the garage, and that was it! Never thought I'd use it for anything else, until one day I was caught off guard  I saw some just like this for sale for far more than I was willing to pay. So I figured I better do something with this thing instead of letting it collect dust. I pondered on it for a while and finally came up with this!

/br> This is what the cabinet looked like before. It's like a mechanics cabinet of some sort.

I had to try and straighten out all the metal inserts. Bent and mangled, ugh. Once I got them straight, for the most part, I painted it. Then I painted it another color. Then I painted it almost the same color it started out. It's a cycle, I had to work through it I guess.

I decided to add a little wood to the fronts. I actually used lattice. At least I think it's called lattice. They super thin wood strips that are in the fencing area. They cost .97 cents each, and I only needed 3!

I used tons and tons of liquid nails and a few clamps to glue the strips to the metal fronts. I also used a screw on each end. The metal was thin enough that this was not a problem. I used the same method to a attach the top and cute little feet.

The stain and glue drying. I've got 30 pound weights hold it down while the glue dries, and a box of dishes holding the top down.

Then came this. The oh so fun part. The 42 label plates. The 84 teeny tiny screws. The pain in my back, neck and fingers. It was fan freakin tastic.

I do believe however it was worth it. Here are a few close ups! Totally fresh barley any clutter.

Welcome to the real world. I love junk collectors. Boxes baskets, cubbies. Ya' know. This is surely no exception. I'm sure in the weeks to come this thing with start to collect more and more.

No one better ask me where a pencil, pen, or a glue stick is...ever. They will probably get the same answer over and over!

I'm actually pretty stoked with how it turned out! I honestly had other plans for it when I started but now I like where it is. We shall see in the long run where it ends up!

Until then,
xoxo

As always linking up to these wonderful parties!

  5. I love it! That is my style of storage for sure, and the added bonus of being able to turn the stinkeye on anyone crazy enough to ask where something is (which my husband does frequently, rather than simply look.) Thanks for linking your awesome makeover to Merry Monday!
